Ski Racing will be back on the Murray in November 2021. Ski Racing Australia has announced that with the obtaining of insurance, the season is go-ahead for July 2021.
For Echuca / Moama and the Moama Water Sports Club (MWSC), this means their two events – the Southern 80 and the Barrie Beehag ski races will be back on the Murray River in the coming season (2021/2022)
Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the return of ski racing events on the Murray would give sports lovers another key offering on NSW’s diverse 2021 events calendar.
“The return of the Southern 80 and the Barrie Beehag ski races is fantastic news for sports lovers, and visitors to the Murray River region. After the challenges of the past year there’s never been a better time to plan a visit and enjoy all that the Riverina Murray region has to offer.”
Echuca / Moama, which has been hit by border closures and lower tourist numbers during the COVID pandemic, will be welcoming the Southern 80 onto the water from the 11th to the 13th of February 2022. The MWSC along with its support partner Destinations NSW, and other sponsors look forward to seeing the racing on the Murray River in February, with the first event being the Breakfast with the Stars, at the Kerrabee Sound Shell in Moama on Friday 11th February 2022.
The Barrie Beehag Ski Race will the Murray on Saturday 1th November with a new-look event. The race will now be over 100km racing from Torrumbarry to Wills Bend and return. MWSC President Steve Shipp believes the longer race will have a greater appeal to competitors, making it more inviting for competitors to travel to Echuca / Moama. The Moama Water Sports Club will continue to work with Ski Racing Australia, Transport for NSW – Maritime, our local councils Campaspe Shire, Murray River Shire, and other parties to ensure COVID safe events can take place.
